Florasis: How Chinese Aesthetics and Smart Manufacturing Shape a Global Beauty Brand

Florasis was founded beside Hangzhou's West Lake in 2017. Revered by poets and painters for millennia, the lake remains a source of inspiration for the makeup and skincare brand.

Since its creation, Florasis has explored the wisdom of traditional beauty rituals while following the philosophy of Chinese aesthetics. It combines advanced technology with research into nourishing floral essences to unite makeup and skincare. The brand describes this marriage of science and art as a gift and legacy linking inner health, outer beauty and ancient craftsmanship.

From West Lake to an international audience

West Lake has inspired Chinese poets and painters for centuries. Florasis draws on that cultural setting while exploring traditional beauty rituals and the use of flower-derived ingredients. Its slogan, “Oriental Makeup, Nurtured by Flowers,” expresses the brand's attempt to connect Chinese visual culture with contemporary cosmetics.

The name

The name Florasis combines “flora” and “sister”. As an homage to the power of the natural world and femininity, it evokes a goddess standing among blossoming flowers.

The logo

Florasis's logo uses the form of a small traditional Chinese window. The brand says this icon expresses its dedication to classical design, style and balance.

Bringing production in-house

One of the most significant steps in the brand's development has been the creation of a smart factory on the banks of the Qiantang River in Hangzhou—a facility that the supplied materials compare to something from a science-fiction film. The 6,480-square-metre factory soft-launched in the previous year and is now fully operational, employing more than 50 technicians and engineers.

The factory uses a proprietary operating system described as a “smart brain” to digitise every step from raw-material sourcing to final product packaging. Robotic transporters use laser navigation systems, while artificial intelligence supports defect detection and formulation optimisation.

Engineers can monitor air pressure, steam, electricity, compressed air and water consumption in real time. Florasis says the site now operates seven digital production lines across skincare, base makeup and powder color cosmetics, with annual capacity of up to 50 million units.

The facility represents a major step for the eight-year-old independent makeup and skincare brand as it develops its international presence through a combination of traditional Chinese aesthetics and advanced technology. Before opening the factory, Florasis outsourced production to third-party manufacturers including Cosmax China. Bringing production in-house provides greater control over formulation, quality, capacity and product development.

Products that turn cultural references into design

Blooming Rouge Love Lock Lipstick

The Blooming Rouge Love Lock Lipstick uses Eastern miniature relief engraving. With every turn of the lipstick bullet, its intricate designs reveal a story inspired by Chinese romance and intended to convey enduring love.

Presented as drawing on 5,000 years of inspiration, the design was developed with a master locksmith and refers to love locks, which were symbols of happiness, love and marriage in ancient China. The collaboration unites detailed craftsmanship, ancient heritage and the blessing of unbreakable love in a portable romantic emblem.

The flexible formula contains jojoba oil and peony seed oil—described by the brand as oil from the “king of flowers”—to enhance lip vitality and colour vibrancy while providing lightweight wear and a soft-matte, non-sticky finish. Drawing on skincare recipes associated with Empress Dowager Cixi, it also contains extracts of Madonna lily, cotton rose and summer snowflake to provide deep moisture and antioxidant benefits.

Luminous Jade Breathable Cushion Foundation

The Lotus Limited Edition cushion foundation is designed for dry skin. Florasis describes a 0.24-micrometre powder made with Butterfly-Light Optics technology and 95% light transmittance, intended to diffuse visible imperfections while maintaining a natural finish. The formula includes 60-times concentrated reishi extract and is presented as providing lasting hydration; brand testing claims improvement to the skin barrier after 28 days. A composite film-forming system is intended to resist water, sweat, excess oil and oxidation for wear of up to 24 hours.

Its lightweight finish is designed for convenient touch-ups on the move. The concentrated reishi essence is presented as delivering 24-hour luminous, jade-like radiance, while the advanced composite film-forming technology is intended to keep the finish fresh throughout the day.

Eastern Beasts Sculpting Makeup Palette

The Eastern Beasts Sculpting Makeup Palette combines three-dimensional relief engraving with the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird and Black Tortoise. These four auspicious beasts are legendary guardians associated with the eternal elements and the four seasons, bringing a sense of elegance to each application.

Its four shimmer and suede-matte shades can be used dry or wet for contour, highlighting, blush and eyeshadow. Compact and highly multifunctional, the palette is designed to add dimension with four essential shades.

The microfine powder contains peony and calendula extracts and moisturising ingredients. It is designed to blend smoothly and evenly with zero fallout, long-lasting colour payoff and bold, buildable pigment.

Culture as a long-term brand asset

Florasis's visual approach goes beyond adding decorative motifs to conventional beauty products. The brand consistently translates architecture, mythology, craftsmanship and floral symbolism into packaging, product names and retail spaces.

Under the message “Do Good, Do More,” Florasis says it seeks to fulfil its responsibility to help people in need, whether through cultural preservation, relief work or other forms of community support. As Florasis grows outside China, the challenge will be to make these references understandable to international consumers without flattening the cultural detail that makes the brand distinctive.
