RED CHAMBER: How a Chinese Clean Beauty Brand Is Expanding Globally
Founded in Shanghai in 2020, RED CHAMBER is combining clean formulations, color cosmetics and sustainability as it expands into overseas markets.
Founded in Shanghai in 2020, RED CHAMBER was created to bring clean beauty into China's cosmetics industry. After developing in the domestic market, the brand built product collections intended to meet two consumer expectations at the same time: clean formulations and strong makeup performance.
RED CHAMBER describes beauty as more than a brief outward appearance and as a way of calling people back to inner beauty. Its brand philosophy argues that the essence of life is pure and clean, that everything beautiful is inherently clean, and that beauty is an infinite return to this essence. It also focuses on people's spiritual aspirations, imagining an ideal world in which people embrace one another and humanity and nature coexist harmoniously.

A name rooted in Chinese literature
The English name RED CHAMBER refers to the Chinese literary classic Dream of the Red Chamber.
In the brand's interpretation, “red” symbolises innovation and transformation. It is a pioneering colour that moves forward and breaks with the old order, as well as an inner spark that signals the beginning of new thinking, new aesthetics and new technologies.
“Chamber” represents diversity and the co-creation of a spiritual home. It is a space in which individual freedom can grow and different ideas can converge, collide and be reshaped. Open, fluid and organic, the chamber is intended to provide a foundation and fertile ground for “beauty in transformation”.
This concept supports the brand's broader message of “clean, safe and sustainable” beauty. Rather than treating clean beauty only as an ingredient claim, RED CHAMBER presents it as a combination of product performance, skin compatibility, transparent formulation standards and respect for nature.
From a Shanghai startup to overseas expansion
According to materials supplied by the brand, RED CHAMBER's development has included the following milestones:
- 2021: Revenue surpassed RMB 10 million.
- 2022: The Re:Conatural Lab, or RCL, was established.
- 2023: The brand released the RED CHAMBER White Paper and Guide in June; annual revenue surpassed RMB 300 million.
- August 2024: RED CHAMBER launched its first global official website, with business covering the United States, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
- October 2024: The brand entered a co-branded collaboration with Heinz.
- 2024: Revenue surpassed RMB 600 million.
- 2025: RED CHAMBER established a Hong Kong entity, built local warehousing systems in multiple overseas countries and reported revenue above RMB 1 billion.
Building a clean-beauty research system
RED CHAMBER describes RCL as China's first clean-beauty research and development laboratory. Centred on what the brand calls “clean technology and Earth-smart manufacturing”, it is intended to reject the hidden safety risks that the brand associates with traditional beauty products.
The independent laboratory covers approximately 1,000 square metres and focuses on the relationship between natural ingredients, skin needs and makeup performance. Its research system for “sustainable beauty” explores the balance between nature, skin and makeup performance, with the stated aim of making naturalness scientifically traceable and quantifiable and redefining standards for safe, healthy and transparent colour cosmetics.
The brand says the laboratory is led by an international formulation specialist with more than ten years of research and development experience, including previous roles in research and development at Coty China and process development at L'Oréal.
Its ingredient-screening process follows China's Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics and also references Clean at Sephora standards, Environmental Working Group risk ratings and global ingredient databases. RED CHAMBER says it screens suspected endocrine disruptors and maintains a dynamically updated, cross-platform ingredient exclusion system.
The source materials state that traditional colour cosmetics may be associated with dullness, pigmentation, clogged pores and allergies, and that wearing makeup for long periods can cause continuing damage and burden to the skin. RED CHAMBER contrasts this with its definition of clean beauty as non-toxic, harmless and suitable for all skin types. These statements reflect the brand's own positioning.
Compliance references
The supplied materials display references to the following regulatory bodies and standards organisations:
- U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA)
- Environmental Working Group (EWG), United States
- European Parliament and Council (EC)
Their inclusion in the supplied materials is reproduced here as a brand-provided compliance reference and should not be read as independent confirmation of certification or approval.
For RED CHAMBER, the commercial challenge is to translate these standards into products that still provide color payoff, texture and ease of application.
Three flagship products
Haruki Multi-Purpose Cream
The Haruki Multi-Purpose Cream is designed for quick, full-face looks. Its compact, portable format and shades that blend naturally with the skin are intended to work for both makeup beginners and experienced users, producing a radiant and healthy-looking glow. The brand highlights medium color payoff, a rich luminous finish and easy application with the fingers. The formula includes lavender oil, vitamin E and ceramides.
Featherlight Eyeshadow Palette
The Featherlight Eyeshadow Palette combines two shades with a built-in primer. RED CHAMBER highlights a moist, silky liquid-to-powder texture, lightweight skin-adhering powder and an effect intended to visually plump the eye contour. It is positioned as resistant to smudging, transfer, creasing, cakiness and visible oxidation. The compact, beginner-friendly two-shade format can be layered for a fresh, translucent and luminous look or a more defined finish.
Haruki Silken Nourish Gloss
The Haruki Silken Nourish Gloss is positioned as a lightweight, high-color-payoff lip product with a water-bright, mirror-like finish. Its low-tack texture is designed to deliver vivid but sheer color in one swipe, with a smooth, soft and water-fresh feel rather than the heavy or oily sensation associated with traditional glosses. The slim bottle is intended for touch-ups on the move. The fragrance-free formula includes three botanical oils that form a moisture-lipid film and is designed to provide continuous, all-day hydration, including for sensitive lips.
Recognition and social responsibility
Brand materials list the following recognition:
- Vogue Beauty Awards 2023 for blush and contour, and the 2024 Grand Prize in the lip makeup category.
- Xiaohongshu FOCUS30, Breakthrough Brands in Emerging Tracks Worth Watching and the China Good Formula annual Makeup of the Year award.
- Tmall Beauty Super Rookie Award 2024 and Tmall Golden Beauty Awards Emerging Star Brand of the Year.
- Brand Planet ESG Brand of the Year 2022, Brand R&D 2023 and Sustainable Product 2023.
- Weibo Beauty V Awards 2023 Best Blush Award.
RED CHAMBER has also connected product campaigns with charitable projects:
- Nearly 100 Xiaohongshu creators and Weibo bloggers with more than one million followers participated in a pet-welfare campaign that generated more than 50 million impressions and 100,000 engagements. Based on the total number of Tmall orders, donations and sticker-tip fees reached RMB 45,413. Using the official price of Petbang staple pet food, the funds purchased 2,000 jin of cat food, 2,000 jin of dog food and 500 sets of medical and warmth supplies.
- From September 25 to October 24, 2023, an offline charity bazaar and part of online product revenue generated RMB 124,127, funding the planting of 12,413 saxaul trees in desert areas.
- From July 15 to August 15, 2024, RED CHAMBER donated 1% of e-commerce sales from a Qixi co-branded gift box to the China Hearing Medicine Development Foundation, helping people with hearing impairments gain more opportunities to hear and to be heard. The project donated RMB 23,311 and delivered 81 orange care kits.
- During the 2024 Flower Fairy co-branding campaign, RED CHAMBER donated 1% of e-commerce sales to the Baby's Breath Charity “Children's Book Joy Donation Program”, providing rural children with high-quality monthly reading resources. On November 30, 500 children's books reached Yinyuan Central Primary School and were placed in their new home with the help of teachers and volunteers.
- For International Women's Day 2025, as winter faded and spring approached, RED CHAMBER partnered with Bannuan Public Welfare, an organisation focused on women's anxiety, and donated RMB 15,000 to the Zhejiang Bannuan Public Welfare Health Service Center. Using emotions as its theme, the programme employed three healing approaches to enter into what the materials call a deep dialogue with the heart, helping women of all ages understand emotional issues and make peace with themselves.
As RED CHAMBER expands internationally, its next test will be whether a clean-beauty proposition developed in China can remain distinctive across markets with different consumer expectations, regulatory environments and definitions of sustainability.
