GLP-1 Weight Loss Surge Drives Beauty Demand for Hair and Collagen Products

Demand for collagen, hair loss, and skin-firming products has surged in tandem with the rising adoption of weight loss medications across the UK, according to new market data from British beauty retailer Lookfantastic.

Lookfantastic reported that online searches for collagen products jumped 762% year-on-year in 2025, climbing from 1,174 to 10,129 searches. Demand for skin-firming products more than doubled between 2023 and 2025, while sales of hair loss treatments increased 27% year-on-year in 2025, rebounding after a decline two years prior.

The figures reflect the rapid growth of GLP-1 weight loss medications in the market. Data from the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) shows uptake among UK adults nearly doubled from 3.1% in June 2025 to 6% by March 2026.

The heightened interest in collagen, firming formulations, and hair care coincides with expanding research into the physiological effects of rapid weight loss. While hair loss is not classified as a direct side effect of GLP-1 medications, medical studies indicate that accelerated weight loss, reduced caloric intake, and potential micronutrient deficiencies can contribute to temporary hair thinning. Loose skin is another well-documented outcome of significant weight reduction.

Francesca Elliott, CEO of THG Beauty Retail, stated: "With the use of GLP-1s on the rise, many of our customers are increasingly proactive about addressing the physical changes that can come with rapid weight loss using GLP-1s, and our data reflects that trend. Rising demand for collagen, skin firming and hair loss products tells us that people are looking for accessible, effective solutions, and we are committed to offering the broadest possible range to meet that need."

Lookfantastic's data underscores how GLP-1 medications are reshaping consumer behavior across sectors, from nutrition to cosmetics and personal care—a beauty industry category that continues to see heightened investor and brand attention, as seen in TSG Consumer acquiring a majority stake in body care brand Saltair. As more consumers seek to mitigate the visible effects of rapid weight loss, retailers and beauty brands are expanding targeted product lines focused on skin elasticity, hydration, and hair density.

A study published in the British Medical Journal, analyzing data from 50,000 adults with type 2 diabetes, found GLP-1 users faced a higher risk of hair loss than those prescribed DPP-4 inhibitors. However, researchers noted that caloric restrictions and nutrient deficiencies are likely key underlying factors rather than the pharmaceutical compounds themselves.
