How Marie Dalgar Uses Art and Technology to Build Long-Term Brand Value
Chinese beauty brand Marie Dalgar launched its Shanhai cushion foundation while revealing five global R&D hubs and a 10-year Chinese color research project.
As twilight settled over the tropical beach in Lingshui, Hainan on July 30, Chinese C-beauty brand Marie Dalgar hosted an immersive brand experience centered around its new "Shanhai" (Mountains and Seas) limited-edition Seed Cushion Foundation. Built around the core ethos of "letting creation keep growing," the brand transformed the oceanfront venue into an interactive exhibition, blending custom product design, visual art, experiential spaces, and natural landscapes.
In a cosmetic market driven by rapid product cycles and digital advertising, Marie Dalgar used the event to demonstrate how integrating long-term artistic practice with technical formulation can offer a distinct path for brand building.
Bringing Nature Into Mind: How an Immersive Aesthetic Experience Unfolds
The phrase "Shanhai" draws on classical imagery of mountains and seas. Within Marie Dalgar's brand narrative, the mountain represents stability, rootedness, and endurance, while the sea symbolizes movement, openness, and adaptation. Together, they outline a creative approach that stays anchored in technical fundamentals while remaining open to new artistic media.
Moving away from conventional, one-way press launches, the brand designed four distinct narrative spaces at the venue to reflect its 18-year history of artistic collaborations:
At the entrance, "Mountain Journal" archived past field trips and co-creations between artists and the brand, leading into "Seed Drops and Sprouts," an installation featuring artist Li Shudan's sculpture Seeds on the Tree to represent the brand's core foundation lineage.
Inside "Shanhai Backstage," visitors explored the formulations and craftsmanship behind the new Shanhai Seed Cushion, the upcoming Domino Eyeshadow line, and several hero products. In the adjacent "MASA Studio," Marie Dalgar Global Artistic Director Damien Dufresne—a French cross-media visual artist and photographer—performed live body painting and color application, turning makeup application into a live art performance.
From Observing to Co-Creating: Building Real Connections
At dusk, outdoor programming resumed at the beachfront "Light and Shadow Theater," where Dufresne directed an immersive visual exhibit set against the ocean breeze and surf.
As daylight faded, the brand showcased its history of creative work across multiple mediums—from short art films like Nature Theater III: Foolish Journey and Flowers of the Earth to AI-assisted video experiments and soundscapes. The event concluded with an outdoor dinner designed to extend sensory engagement.
"I hope everyone can listen to the sound of the ocean, see Marie Dalgar's work—even if imperfect—and enjoy tonight, enjoy every day, enjoy every minute," said Marie Dalgar founder Cui Xiaohong during the event.
Over the past 18 years, the brand has continually tested new media formats to turn product value into experiential capital, aiming to build lasting consumer engagement rather than relying solely on immediate digital impressions.
Translating Art and Technology into Product Reality
While the event expressed the brand's creative philosophy, the limited-edition Shanhai Seed Cushion Foundation served as its physical translation.
The packaging incorporates arch structures inspired by mountain ridges and ocean waves, using repeating geometric lines and fluid curves. To achieve the seamless visual flow across the compact, the brand used In-Mold Labeling (IML) alongside dual-color and multi-color injection molding processes.
The Seed Cushion Foundation remains one of Marie Dalgar's core makeup categories. Formulated with botanical seed oils and the brand's proprietary "Skin Fitting" wear-locking technology, the formula offers a lightweight finish and extended wear time. Cumulative sales across all retail channels have reached nearly 10 million units.
Hosting the launch in Hainan was a deliberate functional choice: the tropical climate's high temperatures, high humidity, and intense UV exposure provided a real-world testing environment to demonstrate the foundation's wear performance.
The Shanhai compact represents the 18th limited-edition iteration of the Seed Cushion series. Past launches have explored themes ranging from traditional Chinese color palettes and regional craft culture to specific lifestyle scenes.
Alongside the foundation, the venue offered a preview of the upcoming Domino Eyeshadow collection, featuring over 50 individual shades designed for custom single-pan assembly or mix-and-match palettes.
Balancing Art and Science
Marie Dalgar's product strategy relies on two complementary capabilities: cultural immersion and manufacturing precision. Cultural engagement provides original aesthetic narrative, while technical formulation ensures reliable product performance.
Cui explained that art brings inspiration into daily makeup routines, while formulation technology optimizes texture, radiance, packaging usability, and finish.
During the presentation, Cui revealed three strategic brand developments:
- Global R&D Network: Marie Dalgar has established five research and development centers in Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai to access international technical resources.
- 10-Year Color Research Initiative: In partnership with the non-profit organization Rong Design Library, the brand launched "Color in Hand," a decade-long project systematically documenting traditional Chinese handcrafted colors into an open-source database for public and industry use.
- Talent Incubator: Marie Dalgar is preparing to launch Masa Studio in collaboration with Damien Dufresne, fostering cross-media artistic exchange in makeup and photography for younger creators.
Building "Slow Assets" in a Fast-Paced Market
Data from the 2025 China Cosmetics Industry Data Report shows that China's beauty market expanded past 1.1 trillion RMB ($150 billion) in 2025, growing 2.8% year-over-year. However, modest top-line growth has heightened competition. As functional product differences narrow across domestic brands, price wars and rapid SKU turnover have pushed companies to seek durable brand equity.
While some domestic legacy operators struggle under intensifying market pressures—as seen in cases like Shanghai Meilan Collapses Into Bankruptcy due to capital shortfalls—brands like Marie Dalgar are investing in long-term artistic assets to establish distinct identities.
From its non-profit ART LAB initiative and ongoing "Nature Theater" field projects to its 10-year color archiving initiative, Marie Dalgar has built an internal creative ecosystem. These continuous creative investments train internal product development teams in color nuance, texture design, and packaging aesthetics, ultimately feeding back into product manufacturing.
In an industry frequently driven by immediate traffic acquisition, Marie Dalgar's dual focus on technological R&D and sustained artistic investment provides a concrete example of building "slow assets"—accumulating long-term cultural capital to support sustainable growth in a maturing cosmetics market.
