Rituals to Refurbish 1,500 Boutiques in €40 Million Premium Push

As prestige beauty brands face intensifying competition, physical retail is evolving from a transactional space into an experiential touchpoint. Rituals' massive, rapid-fire store refurbishment highlights how legacy wellness brands are repositioning themselves in the premium fragrance and color cosmetics sectors to capture younger, experience-driven consumers.

Rituals Cosmetics will embark on a rapid retail expansion, investing 40 million euros to refurbish 1,500 boutiques across 30 countries. The massive undertaking is designed to accommodate new product categories, with a heavy emphasis on fragrance and beauty.

The Amsterdam-based wellness brand plans to complete the sweeping overhaul in just 30 working days, marking one of the largest-scale retail refurbishments in Europe. The updated spaces will feature more stylish merchandising, with premium furniture and fittings that reflect the brand's upscale market positioning.

In an interview, Rituals Chief Operating Officer Gregory Bruyer explained that the brand will renew more than 40 boutiques each working day, deploying around 100 teams across Europe. The transformation is scheduled to run from early August through September 25.

Bruyer described the project as "an incredibly complex and challenging operation," but noted it is essential to support the brand's renewed focus on personal well-being and experiential retail. The redesigned spaces are tailored to showcase Rituals' expanding portfolio of skincare, haircare, makeup, and new fragrance launches.

"We strongly believe that Rituals is all about sense, about discovery, and that we can do better. So we're launching two new perfume lines, and they will have a prominent place within our stores," Bruyer said.

Rituals is treating the fragrance category as a major growth driver, aiming to capture a larger share of spend from its 40 million-plus loyalty program members.

The brand's strategy includes offering both "haute" and premium fragrance tiers to attract younger consumers who approach scent differently—focusing on exploration, customization, and fragrance layering. This shift mirrors broader market dynamics, where brands like Sol de Janeiro are targeting new demographics with highly viral, youth-centric body and hair mists.

"Fragrance is exploding everywhere, and the customers are getting younger as well. The concept of a fragrance wardrobe, of layering, is getting big. We're even seeing hair mists doing well, with people using them five or six times a day," Bruyer said.

Following the refit, the boutiques will feature a lighter, more premium aesthetic designed to elevate the customer experience and encourage product discovery. At the center of this new layout is "Beauty World," a dedicated zone where skincare, makeup, and fragrance are merchandised together.

Other segments will also receive expanded placement, including the Private Home Collection, the Homme men's line, and the brand's recently launched haircare range. Additionally, the Luxury Travel Collection will be introduced to most locations. This focus on highly personalized, interactive retail environments aligns with a growing industry trend toward experiential brick-and-mortar spaces, such as Code8 Beauty's bespoke lipstick experiences in London.

Raymond Cloosterman, founder and CEO of Rituals, noted that his goal has always been to build "an international well-being brand, an innovative concept within the luxury beauty industry that was the first to combine high-quality products, accessibility and making a positive impact. We are not building a retail company, but a brand. Our boutiques have played an essential role in this from Day One. This is where our vision of luxury comes to life."

Sustainability is also a core focus of the project. In line with the brand's B Corp certification, the refit adheres to a "remove, refresh, and reuse" philosophy. Existing furniture and materials are being repurposed, while new fixtures are designed for modular, flexible use across different store layouts.

This eco-conscious approach is part of Rituals' broader sustainability targets, which include transitioning to 90% natural-origin formulas and utilizing refillable, recyclable, or recycled packaging.

On a global scale, Rituals typically opens about one new boutique every working day, totaling roughly 200 new stores annually. A similar refurbishment program is slated for Asia and the Middle East in the first quarter of 2027, following the rollout of the new collections in those markets.

Bruyer emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent quality, design, and customer service across all touchpoints, regardless of store size or location.

"We very much believe in physical retail and once we open a store we see online sales in the region rise. We are truly an omnichannel company," he concluded.

Founded in Amsterdam in 2000, Rituals now operates thousands of points of sale, including 4,176 shop-in-shops, and is currently trialing its "Mind Oasis" spa and meditation spaces in select flagship locations.
