Lucy McPhail on Curation, Partnerships, and Beauty Merchandising at Harvey Nichols

Lucy McPhail joined UK luxury department store Harvey Nichols as Beauty Buying & Merchandising Director, bringing extensive executive experience from senior leadership roles at Threads Styling, Liberty, and Harrods, alongside strategic consulting for Space NK.

In an interview with TheIndustry.beauty, McPhail reflects on her career trajectory, key retail lessons, and her strategic vision for shaping Harvey Nichols' luxury beauty portfolio.

Have you always had an interest in beauty? Why does it appeal to you, and why did you want to work in the industry?

I began my buying career in fashion over 20 years ago, but beauty has always been my true passion. While others invested in designer apparel, I was fascinated by beauty products, brand narratives, and the emotional connections they build with consumers. From the confidence a great product inspires to the sensory memories evoked by a distinct fragrance, beauty has always felt uniquely personal to me.

When the opportunity arose to transition from womenswear into beauty buying, it felt like a natural progression—a chance to align my commercial background with an industry I genuinely loved.

Tell us about your first job in beauty. What drew you to the role, and what was that experience like?

My first beauty role was at Harrods, and I instantly knew I had found the right industry. The position offered direct exposure to world-class prestige brands, visionary founders, and cutting-edge product innovation. It was an inspiring environment that expanded my perspective on luxury beauty and its global potential.

What were the most valuable skills or lessons you gained from that initial experience?

The most vital lesson was that beauty is fundamentally a relationship-driven business. Long-term success relies on trust, whether you are partnering with an emerging founder or an established global conglomerate. Understanding how high-growth brands manage investment and scale retail growth, alongside the ambition and passion behind every product, directly influences how I lead commercial partnerships today.

Earlier this year, Harvey Nichols launched a dedicated wellness floor at its Knightsbridge flagship, unifying fitness, beauty treatments, nutrition, and athleisure retail within a single space.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

I love driving the strategic direction of beauty at Harvey Nichols and curating an offering that feels distinctive, relevant, and elevated. While market convenience has become increasingly prominent, our priority remains curation, brand discovery, and an exceptional in-store and online customer experience.

I am passionate about identifying whitespace opportunities, introducing innovative brands to market, and giving clients compelling reasons to explore. Few things are more rewarding than introducing customers to an unexpected brand and watching it build a dedicated following.

If you could give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be?

Be patient and trust your judgment. Not every challenge demands an immediate reaction. Taking time to reflect usually leads to better strategic decisions, stronger relationships, and greater operational resilience. Passion and dedication are essential, but long-term perspective is equally vital.

What does the next chapter of your career look like, and how do you plan to grow from here?

I am eager to keep pushing retail innovation, deepening brand partnerships, and helping shape the future of luxury beauty merchandising. Bringing curated international concepts like Violet Grey to the UK demonstrated what is possible when strategic vision and retail collaboration align. I look forward to challenging retail conventions, supporting breakout brands, and discovering new opportunities for market impact.

Is there a leader or mentor you have always admired, and why?

The beauty industry is filled with remarkable talent, making it tough to highlight just one individual. In my role, I am fortunate to collaborate with early-stage brand founders across multiple categories, and I can quickly spot which concepts are positioned for long-term growth.

Building a successful beauty brand requires a proven formula, but the ultimate catalyst is always that touch of consumer resonance—the brand magic. More often than not, that magic stems directly from the founder and the team behind the product. Recognizing that potential early remains one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
